Classmates

Come join us and let everyone know "what's been going on with you".    In addition to helping us stay in touch with you, you will be helping us build a directory of the class from the information you provide, so we can keep everyone up to date with plans for the 45th.  You need to provide a username and password so that you can edit your information later if you choose to.  Fill in as much additional information as you are comfortable giving....we hope you will all give us an up-to-date address, phone number and email address (isn't email wonderful...think of how much easier all of this would have been for the 10th and the 20th!!!!  Course we were young and energetic back then.)  AND maybe a recent photo along with a bit of news about you.  If you don't have a picture handy right now....you can add it later.  If you don't have a "then" photo don't worry about it...it will magically appear in a couple of days.  Thank you for joining in the fun of remembering.

Greetings, to each and every one of you ex-Hilltop Lancers. It's been a long time coming. Hard to believe forty years have passed . After graduating high school I attended college at Southwestern. That was soon cut short when the U.S. Army sent me off to Vietnam. After being wounded there, I spent about six months in hospitals in San Diego and San Pedro, after which time the Army decided I was of no use to them so I returned to college.  I received my AA degree at Southwestern and then attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where I met my future wife. My art studies led me to to California Institute of the Arts in Valencia where I received both my B.F.A. and an Irvine Scholarship for my M.F.A.  In the interim, I obtained a California Teaching credential from Point Loma College, having to do my student teaching at Hilltop High of all places. From there I went to work as an Assayer doing testing of precious metals for a company to inform them as to the purity of the gold and silver they would buy and sell.
Around this time , I was reaquainted with my friend from college, and her two children. We were together for twenty two years before getting married in 2005. I worked as a photographer, photographing products for catalogs, great job if you can keep the work coming in.  I worked as a finished carpenter, a general contractor building custom homes, and back to being a high school art teacher, then to teacher  for the California State Prison.
We lost our son Bradley to a tragic car crash shortly after his seventeeth birthday. He was to have been a high school senior that fall.  We will never get over the hurt and loss of Bradley.
While teaching for the Prison's, I was talked into becoming a parole agent for the state and that is what I am doing today along with my art of which will always be a part of my life.

Comment: Married to same guy for 32 years, still living in Utah.  Have 2 kids and 3 grandchildren (the best part of raising kids!).  Am hating Utah this year; too much snow (7 feet since Jan 1).  Ready for warmer climes.  While I love snow shoeing, I can always drive up to the mountains.  We travel with our trailer - and our dogs.  We've been all over the West, top to bottom.  I've been retired for several years now.  Have taken up cooking, much to my waist's dismay and my husbands chagrin (they don't all turn out well!).

Funny, small world.  Worked for Williams International in Ogden, Utah for 23 years.  Early on a bunch of us went out on Friday night for a drink.  Got to talking about younger high jinks.  Tijuana came up; a guy jumped right in, knowing all about it.  Started comparing notes and discovered he not only attended HHS, but graduated in '68 (we were a pretty big class!).  Shell (or John) Sparger.  I had to run home and dig out my yearbook.  He quit the company, and I have no idea where he ended up.

Love computers, but am pretty illiterate on how to use them (couldn't upload a photo without big time help).  Oh well - my senior picture looks better than me now anyway!

David and I have been married 47 years and have 2 adult children--Brooks and Casey.  Our son and his wife, Maria, gave us two beautiful grandchildren.

Hannah is 5 & in kindergarten and Gabriel is a year.  We think they are pretty special and are fortunate to see them all the time. Can't believe we have been out of school for 50 years but the road map on my face does reflect the years.   Just doesn't seem possible in so many ways but then again it seems like forever since we were those carefree teenagers without a care in the world....now look at us!  Wow.....    Looking forward to the 50th reunion.

Hey Lancers! It will be good to see how you all have been spending your time since high school – so many many years ago. I have spent the bulk of the past fifty-five years in public education as a teacher, principal, and assistant superintendent of schools. I retired at the end of 2011, although I continue to teach educational research for National University. For the past twelve years, I have been pursuing past loves, i.e., playing guitar and rock ‘n roll, photography (dangriderphoto.com), alpine skiing, travel, hiking and backpacking, and standup paddle boarding. I share most of my time with my wonderful wife of thirty years, Gayle.  Between the two of us, we have four remarkable adult children and twelve beautiful grandchildren.  While life has been challenging at times, as I’m sure it has been for all of you, it has also been good to us, blessing us with good health, amazing family and friends, and increasing opportunities to be of service to others. I will most likely miss the reunion, but wish the best to all my “old” Lancer friends.

Comment: I hear I've been missing for years... who knew?  I'm pretty sure I'm not lost.  Let's see, my Dad died 2 years ago but Mom is holding on in the same old house and I never changed my name so I'm not sure how I got lost.  I did give up "cathy" in my 20s and now insist on Catherine.

My favorite quote remains John Lennon's "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."  So, while I planned many things, life led me to an unplanned marriage (28 happy years), an unplanned child (his--but I claim her), a retirement, an unexpected grandchild and now a second chance at seeing the world through a child's eyes as a "nana."

Before retiring I defined myself through my work (software engineering and then management).  After retiring I threw myself into gardening, cooking and LOTS OF volunteering.  I sat on many boards and tried to take on all the world's problems at once.  I now focus on raising money for and running a program for developmentally delayed infants AND enjoying my 2 year old grandson.

Although not what I ever planned or anticipated, life is sweet and rewarding.  We live in Laguna Beach (NO, it is not like that stupid TV show).  My husband (Don Wentzel) is still working (consulting out of the home but it does keep him busy).  Everyone seems to talk of travel and we go when we get the urge but I'm happiest with my volunteer work and my family.

Where do you all get those old photos?  I have no idea where my old yearbook is!  As for the new ones, I am usually the one taking the pics.  This one is from travels last fall.

Bob & I have lived in northern California since 1973.  We are happily retired in Sonoma County.

I loved Hilltop High School and all the interesting people I met there-students, teachers & parents. I am thankful to still be friends with Diane Weston Belcher,  Sharla Longerbone Coyle and Kathy Kennedy Beard.  I grieve each time I hear of another Lancer passing.

Best to all of you! We look forward to seeing you at the 50th Reunion.  Bob and I met during my senior year just after the Rose Parade - so we will be celebrating fifty yeras togehter as well as the class reunion.

Comment: Hello Classmates,

My life has been a blast since High School.  I hated High School.  I was so glad when High School ended.  I have 5 wonderful adult children, 3 grandchildren and no husband.  Can life get any better? Yes it can. I'm in a wonderful relationship with a woman.  We have so much fun traveling, playing golf, dancing and living life to it's fullest.  I look forward to seeing you all even if I won't remember who you are. Stay Happy

Greetings all.  Nipomo is currently called home.  Shortly after the 20th, I gave up smoking, returned to a healthy lifestyle and rediscovered my love of running.  Since then I have run 6 Boston and a total of 9 Marathons.  Most recently, I had a dismal (hopefully temporary) effort in 2007 San Diego Rock ‘n Roll Marathon.  I have enjoyed running in international track events in Europe, Australia and the US, though I’m NOT national class, it sure is fun.

I retired from a career has a software engineer and analyst at the end of 2006 and besides running, enjoy reading about what interests me at the moment, tending my gardens (where I grow my own organic fruits and vegetables) and traveling.  People ask me what I can possibly do with all the free time, but alas, everything now seems to take me twice as long to do half as much.  I’ll stay retired, thank you.

Artist on my running I-Pod with the most tunes: Tom Waits, who I admit I was listening to and had no clue he was a former classmate until Paul Rowe told me at the 20th. We never met in high school, but he has ridden my ears through thousands of miles, and he is far better than Advil.

2023 update.  Moved to Nipomo CA in 2015 from Fresno.  Still running as I pull 73 and push 74.  Older and slower for sure. Now picture from 2022 Baywood/Los Osos Octoberfest 4-mile race.
