Classmates

Come join us and let everyone know "what's been going on with you".    In addition to helping us stay in touch with you, you will be helping us build a directory of the class from the information you provide, so we can keep everyone up to date with plans for the 45th.  You need to provide a username and password so that you can edit your information later if you choose to.  Fill in as much additional information as you are comfortable giving....we hope you will all give us an up-to-date address, phone number and email address (isn't email wonderful...think of how much easier all of this would have been for the 10th and the 20th!!!!  Course we were young and energetic back then.)  AND maybe a recent photo along with a bit of news about you.  If you don't have a picture handy right now....you can add it later.  If you don't have a "then" photo don't worry about it...it will magically appear in a couple of days.  Thank you for joining in the fun of remembering.

After high school I worked at the San Diego Zoo for a year then went back to college at UCSD.  After graduating from UCSD I went back to the Zoo for a while then worked at UCSD then back to graduate school and postdoctoral training at UCSD where I worked in genetics.  About 15 years ago I moved to Honolulu where I started a genetic testing lab which I subsequently sold to a local hospital.  About 8 years ago I retired.  I’ve got one daughter and one grandson and will be getting married for the second time this April.  Update: I did get married on April 5.  The "now" picture is from the wedding day.

In March of this year my husband of 47 years passed away. Soon after I sold our home in Caliente and moved to Reno Nevada to live with my son Mike and his family. I spend my time doing crochet projects--mostly afghans, baking for the grandchildren and teaching 9 & 10 year old kids in a Primary (Sunday school) class. My children are scattered all over- Missouri, Texas, Michigan, Okinawa Japan and of course, here in Nevada. After the reunion I'll be visiting two of them in Missouri.

Comment:      I've been living in southern Arizona for the last 18 years.  I traded Chula Vista for a town called Sierra Vista about 75 miles southeast of Tucson.
After the last reunion my husband's job took us to Hawaii for a year and a half.  When we returned I started working for an insurance agent and I'm still there.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the reunion.

Because most of you scattered to live your lives elsewhere in the world. I recently made a discovery about my Chula Vista which has been my home for 67 years.

During a walk to a local water tank which you can see all of Chula Vista, North, East, West and South, I found myself looking at my life.

From this precipice I can see my parents house on ”J” Street where I built my first darkroom.

From this precipice I can Hilltop High School where I met you.

From this precipice I can see the Cross Country Trails I ran in Rice Canyon at Hilltop High.

From this precipice I can see the backstop where I played Junior Varsity Baseball at Hilltop High.

From this precipice I can The Chapel of the Roses where I married my wife of 35 years, Melody.

From this precipice I can the house I bought at 431 Horizon View Drive in 1984.

From this precipice I can see Clear View Elementary where my two children went to school.

Today, I finished my syllabus for two classes in Photography I teach at San Diego State University. I have been teaching Photography for 40 years-25 at Southwestern College.

Yes, as some of you have noted Chula Vista has changed, but from the water tank it still seems pretty much the same.

See all you soon, Craig.

My friend and best man at my wedding, Kim Acker, has died due lung cancer. I helped Kim through hospice and I am also handling his estate. Kim was a quiet and reclusive man, he served his country as an Airborne Ranger and lived in Chula Vista until his death.

After high school I spent a couple years at Southwestern College working as a photographer on the College Magazine and Newspaper.

I transferred to San Diego State University and worked for the Daily Aztec and received a Bachelors of Arts in Journalism in 1973. In the Fall of 1974 I started graduate school at Humboldt State University and received my Master of Arts in Studio Arts in 1976.

My interest in photography was documentary in style and I photographed through out the United States for the next five years. Among many college teaching positions, I have also worked as an editorial and commercial photographer for the last 35 years.

I became a Lecturer in Multi-Media, teaching photography in the School of Art, Design and Art History at San Diego State University in 1995.

I married Melody Smith of Chula Vista in April of 1983 and we will celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary in April. We have two fine children, Trevor and Chelsea. If you watched the world series, my son Trevor engineered the ”instant replay“ for Fox Sports and lives and works in West Hollywood working for a company called Thumbwars.

Chelsea is an assistant trainer for Circle S Ranch and works for Jim & Deanna Searles in Scouttsdale, Arizona. Circle S Ranch is one of the finest Quarter Horse Training facilities in the country.

My mother, Emilie Carlson will turned 93 in January, some of you might remember her helping with the Marching Band for many years.

My most recent and current photographic project is Sunset Boulevard, which you can see my blog and portfolio on my Web Site: craigcarlson.net.

My most important memory of high school was my government teacher Mr. Cummings. On the June 4th, 1968 assassination of Robert Kennedy, I found Mr. Cummings sitting in a student desk, outside the classroom in the grass between buildings crying. Up to that time most of my experiences in life was as a juvenile, but understanding the assassination and seeing Mr. Cummings collapsed in the desk, I was awakened to the adult world.

Sometimes I think I have spend my life looking for nothing and, well, I pretty well found it when I came here. I have always had a love for wild things and wild places. That is what has defined my life: ocean, mountains, horses, dogs. Me and the wave, me and the horse, me and the mountain. Christian since 1971, best decision I ever made. Married in 1975 to a Ranger Naturalist/Park worker. Office Mgr/Account Controller in a National Park. Widowed in 1987. Remarried in '88. Moved out of state to raise a family on a farm. Hiking and winter mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada. Rode with a world-class horse trainer, jumped horses. Started young horses and gathered stock at a gallop with my baby in a pack. Single for 20-yrs. Ride a mountain bike and horses. Can fix almost anything in the body, including cancer. I believe that we are Loved. I work with minimally retarded males and totally love it. Have one lovely, successful daughter, no grands. So sorry to see that so many from our class have passed, and so many which were the best and brightest of us. Best to all for good health and happiness for the remainder of our lives.
